Homesteader Roots tree program returns for year six

Deadline is Friday to apply for the program this year

After five years of the Homesteader Roots program, there are 51 new deciduous trees gracing Powell properties.

Now, program founder Josh Pomeroy, owner of Blue Ribbon Tree Service, is looking for the next batch of community members who want a large shade tree or small ornamental tree in their yard.

The deadline is Friday to apply for the program this year. Applications can be picked up at the Powell Valley Chamber of Commerce, along with a packet to donate to the program; the cost sharing effort only requires landowners to pay $75 toward the new tree.

While the final varieties of trees will not be known until the local nurseries receive a supply, Pomeroy said there are usually about 10 different trees to choose from.

“We have a few restrictions — as we say, ‘right tree, right place’ — based on the homeowner’s location,” he said.

Sites are checked after the application is submitted to ensure the type of tree desired will work.

The program subsidizes the cost of planting mature shade trees on the properties of private homes in Powell. The $75 charge for homeowners covers roughly 25% of the cost for the tree, installation and maintenance for a year; the other 75% is covered by donations.

For more information, email homesteaderroots@gmail.com or pick up an application at the Powell chamber.
