Teten signs to continue baseball career

Another Powell Pioneer has signed to continue his baseball career at the next level, as Abel Teten became the second Pioneer to sign this spring for NCAA Division III Hibbing College in Minnesota.

“I didn’t expect it,” Teten said. “The coach reached out to me pretty recently, and said they needed some extra guys. They were down a couple of outfielders.”

Teten has been a part of the Pioneers since last season, earning an All-State selection in his first campaign with the team in 2025.

He was the Pioneers’ second leading hitter, holding a .382 average, recording the most hits overall on the team with 65, scoring the most runs at 48 and recording 34 RBIs, the fourth most on the team.

Prior to moving to Powell, Teten was part of the Buffalo Bulls, and earned an ‘A’ East All-Conference Second Team nod in 2024.

Growing up in Buffalo, Teten said his father, Adam, was his main coach for most of his life before moving to Powell.

“He’s coached me since T-ball really. There were only two years before I moved here that he wasn’t my coach,” Teten said. “He basically taught me the game basics, little techniques, methods, everything. Honestly, I owe all my knowledge to him.”

Since moving to Powell, he said it has been good to change his perspective on the game.

“It was definitely a big change, but I see it as a good thing to learn baseball through someone else’s eyes. To see it through someone else’s perspective, it’s been helpful to me to see it from a couple different points of views throughout my life,” Teten said.

While competing at Powell High School, Teten was also part of the basketball team each of his two years as a Panther, seeing plenty of time with the varsity squad. But baseball has always been his sport.

“I’ve always been really good at baseball. It’s my main sport, it’s the one I’m best at,” he said. “I also feel like my knowledge for baseball is a little more than other sports that I do, I have a little better understanding of it.”

Moving to the next level he will be joining a current teammate as a Cardinal, as Kolby Gates signed with Hibbing in March.

“That was definitely also a big reason. I’m gonna go play baseball with one of my friends,” Teten said.

Starting his senior season, Teten feels that he is ahead of where he was a year ago thanks to a strong offseason.

“It’s early in the season, I’m already better than I was last year,” he said. “That’s from offseason work. I’m better at baseball. I feel like I know more. I’m just growing within the sport as I grow with it.”

Teten said that he plans to maintain a strong mindset and attitude as he competes for a spot in the Cardinal lineup at the college level.

“Competition is competition. You’ve just got to go out and do what you can and perform at your best,” Teten said. “I’ve definitely got to keep that mindset, keep that attitude. That’s a huge part, that’s my main focus.”

He added that his family has been huge in supporting him over the years, including his mom Ashley, sister Ava, as well as his brother August who has become one of his full-time teammates on the Pioneers this season as a freshman.

Heading to college, he said he plans to study sports management which could branch out into a number of different career opportunities for him.

“I’m hoping to be a basketball coach honestly,” Teten said. “Sports management, it could be a bunch of different things. I could go into agency from there, there are a lot of different paths I could take if I wanted to change my mind.”

Despite a 6-9 start to the year, Teten believes the Pioneers are making strides to where they want to be once the postseason rolls around.

“I’m looking forward to the rest of the season. We’re on the right track right now,” he said.
