Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24 at Thompson Funeral Home for Helen Louise Phillips Decker. Helen died at age 97 on Friday, Feb. 17 at her home in Powell with family by her side.
Helen was born in Columbia City, Ind., Dec. 21, 1914. She was the second of five children born to Homer L. and Effa Jones Phillips. She attended grade and high schools in Columbia City.
Helen moved with her family to Hollenberg, Kan., in 1932, where she met her future husband, Pearl Decker. They were married Nov. 17, 1934, in Washington, Kan., and shared 73 years together.
Helen and her husband arrived in the Powell Valley on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 22, 1934. They farmed in the area for 43 years until their retirement and they moved into Powell.
Helen took great pleasure in fishing, making crafts, working puzzles, playing cards, tending her flowers, and hosting family and friends. Helen and Pearl were members of the Polecat Ramblers Good Sam Club and enjoyed many travels and adventures.
Survivors include daughters, Louise Taylor and Lois (Heber) Hart both of Powell and Leanna Phipps (Ernest) of Dupont, Colo.; sister Marjorie (Paul) Decker and sister-in-law Ardath Decker, all of Powell.
Helen is also survived by six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She was also blessed with many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her sisters, Lucille Karst and Jean Reid, her brother, Homer “Bud” Phillips, half sisters, Mildred Blanchard and Pauline Blanchard, sons-in-law Dick Lynch and Lynn Taylor.
