Heart Mountain Youth Soccer closed out its spring season in grand fashion at the State Cup in Casper over the Memorial Day weekend, with two of the teams, the U10 and U12, coming home as State Champions in the Silver Division.
“We went 13-1-1 in our last 15 games and were a top-5 team in the state across all classifications, gold and silver, by the end of the season,” said U10 coach Brian Orr. “Each player improved significantly and gained confidence in their abilities. This was the first U10 Heart Mountain team to win the Wyoming State Cup, which shows the growth of the program as a whole. It was a special season that will be remembered for a long time.”
The U10 team had to wait through a thunderstorm that interrupted its opening match against host Casper on Saturday morning.
But once the skies cleared, it was the Heart Mountain squad providing the thunder.
Emily Orr got the scoring started by kneeing in a Gunnar Erickson corner kick, while Erickson took care of the rest of offense, scoring four goals to help the team coast to a 5-1 win.
Saturday afternoon brought a match-up with Cody, with Heart Mountain continuing its quick-hit offense, and spreading it around, with scores from Conner Boswell, Chance Franks, Lauryn Bennett, Will Jackson and Erickson, on the way to a 6-1 win.
Sunday morning’s match provided somewhat of a breather against an overmatched Gillette team.
“They are a young team, which allowed us to play kids in multiple positions and rest our legs for the semifinals,” Orr said. “I was able to pull up Ashtyn Wardell from defense and Kaden Hammond out of goalkeeper to play offense in the second half and each got their first goals of the season.”
Jackson scored three times for a hat trick and Erickson added two goals in the 7-0 win.
Having gone 3-0 in pool play, the semifinal brought about a rematch with Cody Sunday afternoon.
Six minutes in, Landon Hernandez used his left foot to put a rebound into the net and Franks booted in a long shot from his defensive position for a score and a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Cody would get on the board early in the second half, but Jackson answered back with two straight goals to make it a more comfortable, 4-1 margin.
A late score for Cody cut the lead, but it was too little too late as Heart Mountain moved into the championship with the 4-2 win.
The title match kicked off Monday morning against Douglas and proved to be the biggest challenge for the local U10s, at least early on.
Jackson got the scoring started on a breakaway goal, with Douglas responding with a score to tie it up.
Jackson put one in off of a nice pass from Erickson to put Heart Mountain back up, but Douglas answered back to tie it again at 2-2.
The back and forth would be short-lived, however, as Jackson was soon unleashed, scoring three more goals before the half to break it open at 5-2.
The defense would hold steady and Bennett added an insurance goal off a slick pass from Erickson, to secure the 6-2 win and claim the Wyoming State Cup.
On the U12’s road to the championship, Heart Mountain edged Casper by a 5-3 score in their opening match Saturday, before blasting Buffalo 11-1 to advance to the semifinals.
There, they topped Sheridan 5-2 to make it to the title match against the Green River Spurs.
But it was Heart Mountain that had the giddy-up and poured on the scoring in a 7-1 win for the Wyoming State Cup Championship.
