Downtown trick-or-treating hinges on COVID numbers

Halloween is happening, but events will look a little different for 2020.

Downtown businesses are tentatively planning to give out candy during Powelloween, but the popular event may be canceled due to COVID-19.

“With the weekly COVID numbers continuing to increase, we’ve been waiting until the last moment to pull the trigger that we are indeed going to have the event,” said Toby Bonner, general manager of the Powell Tribune, which organizes the downtown event.

If Powelloween gets the green light, plans will be announced in the Thursday, Oct. 29 edition of the Tribune. The event is tentatively scheduled for 3-5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30.

All trick-or-treaters are asked to follow a one-way route, walking north on the east side of Bent Street and south on the west side of Bent. Trick-or-treaters also are encouraged to practice safe social distancing.

Businesses are encouraged to have tables outside and to wear masks.

Meanwhile, the following Halloween events are scheduled for next week:

• The American Legion Post 26 in Powell will host a “social distancing” parade from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31, at the Legion Hall, 143 S. Clark St. Kids and parents will enter the hall a few at a time and go through a line to pick up a bag of cotton candy, a bag of popcorn and a hot dog. Participants will exit out the back door, where volunteers will hand out candy, Halloween toys and stuffed animals, while supplies last. “All our volunteers will be wearing masks and gloves for the safety of everyone,” said Susan Sironen with the American Legion Auxiliary. The event is free to the community.

• American Dream Drive-in Theatre is encouraging moviegoers to wear their Halloween costumes to showings of “Hotel Transylvania” and “Hocus Pocus” at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30. Then on Saturday, Oct. 31, the drive-in will show “The Curse of La Llorona” at 8 p.m. The cost is $15/car or $7/single.

• Powell Valley Care Center will host its annual trick-or-treating event at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, weather permitting. Trick-or-treaters will remain outdoors, and candy will be available at staff-manned stations. Participants are asked to wear a mask and maintain social distancing. Care center residents will be inside their rooms with windows closed, but will be able to watch the trick-or-treaters go by. If it is below 40 degrees, PVHC will not hold the event. If anyone would like to contribute a bag of candy, the care center will have a “Halloween candy” tote outside the front door for people to drop off candy donations.

• The Powell Elks Lodge No. 2303 will host a Littles Haunted House from 4-6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30. It will be a “not so scary” haunted house for younger kids at the lodge, 581 N. Clark St. Admission is free, and there will be candy.

• First United Methodist Church will be offering showings of “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!” at the church’s parking lot at 137 W. Second St., just one block west of Big Horn Federal. Showings will be at 3:30, 4 and 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30. The church will also be handing out pre-packaged popcorn balls to trick-or-treaters.

• The Powell High School Drama Department will present its Nightmares 2020 Haunted House from 7-10 p.m. on Oct. 23-24 and Oct. 30-31 at the Park County Fairgrounds in the Rabbit Barn. Admission is $8, with $1 off with a can of food for Powell Valley Loaves and Fishes.

• Yellowstone Motors will host trick-or-treating and a costume contest from 3-5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30. Yellowstone Motors is located at 1005 W. Coulter Ave.
