State in Cody starting Friday

In the second to last tournament of the season the Powell Panther golf teams both took third at the 3A West Conference Tournament in Lovell on Thursday and Friday.

Cody Fisher was the Panther’s top finisher, taking second overall after rounds of 74 and 75.

“Cody had a great week with these two rounds,” coach Troy Hildebrand said. “He was two under on his front nine both days and really handled the pressure of battling for the individual conference title well. He will definitely be a factor at state this week as well as he has played all season.”

That effort earned Fisher All-Conference honors.

Second in for the Panthers was Park Harvison, who took 16th overall with rounds of 90 and 86.

“Park battled through a rough patch in the middle of his opening round but he did a very nice job of getting through that round and then played much more like himself on day two,” Hildebrand said. “He is working hard each day and he’ll do everything he can this week to be at his best in Cody.”

Kason Sherman finished third, shooting two rounds of 91 to take 18th.

“Kason had his best tournament rounds to date this week, which really came as no surprise as well as he has been hitting the ball lately,” Hildebrand said. “He is still pretty new to tournament golf and I think he does a good job of learning each week.”

Jace Harris was the fourth Panther across, taking 24th with rounds of 93 and 94.

“Jace played right around his average this week and put together a few stretches each day where he played very well,” Hildebrand said. “If he can do that in Cody this week he’ll be able to put up a couple of rounds in the 80s to round out his senior season.”

Abel Teten was the final Panther in for the boys, shooting rounds of 104 and 97 to take 31st.

“Abel had a handful of blow-up holes over the two rounds in Lovell and that pushed his rounds a little higher than usual, but he did a nice job of hanging in there both days and finding some positives to build on for this week,” Hildebrand said.

The Panther boys tied for third with Cody at 694, as Lander took the individual and team titles with rounds of 70 and 77 by Josh Lozier and a 605 team score to take first by 51 strokes.

Emery Hernandez was the leader for the Panther girls, taking fifth overall with rounds of 82 and 92.

“Emery had another very solid weekend,” Hildebrand said. “She was just a couple strokes off the lead after the first round and hung right around there through the first nine on day two as well. She had a couple of tough holes in her last nine, but she definitely showed that she’s going to be right in the mix this week at state.”

Just behind was Coy Erickson, taking sixth overall with rounds of 94 and 88.

“It was nice to see Coy put together a great final nine holes that included two birdies to shoot another round in the 80s this week and earn a second All-Conference honor,” Hildebrand said. “She has had a very good senior season and with her past success on the Cody course I expect her to have a great week at state to close out her career.”

Ali Scott was third, finishing 14th overall with rounds of 106 and 105.

“Ali continued her consistent and solid play for a freshman,” Hildebrand said. “She continues to hit a lot of good shots in each round and I look forward to her work around the greens paying off with two rounds for us this week.”

Maddie Croft was the final Panther into the clubhouse, taking 16th with rounds of 109 and 117.

“Maddie posted a career best on Thursday with her 109 which was easily the most solid all-around golf she has played over the past two years,” Hildebrand said. “She has a great attitude and has been working very hard in practice each day so it was really nice to see that pay off for her this week.”

The girls’ team took third with a total of 569, just four strokes behind Lander in second.

Lander’s Keigann Watson took first individually with two rounds of 82 while Cody ran away with the team title by 53 strokes with a total of 512.

The Panthers will spend plenty of time this week in Cody, playing practice rounds on Monday and Tuesday before taking part in the state tournament on Friday and Saturday.

Starting tee times are set for 10 a.m. each day.

“Looking forward to both the boys and the girls battling for a trophy this week,” Hildebrand said.

He said it looks like Lander and Wheatland have separated themselves on the boys’ side, while the Cody girls’ team has been strong over the past few weeks with home course advantage.

He is hopeful the girls will be in the mix alongside Lander and Wheatland for a trophy while the boys’ side will be a battle between several teams for third place.
