The Powell High School girls’ track and field team topped the team standings in Worland, winning the D&D Invitational on Thursday against 10 other teams.

One Panther added a new individual state qualifying mark, as Paige Sanders took the long jump title with a leap of 16 feet, 7 1/2 inches.

Sanders was also part of two qualifying relay teams, as she, Ashlee Jacobsen, Lucy Ostermiller and Kindyle Floy won the 4x100 with a time of 52.3 seconds and qualified; while the 4x400 relay team of Sanders, Karee Cooley, Kaytlee George and Audrey Johnson finished second and qualified with a time of 4:13.51.

“Getting relays qualified early is huge as it gives us flexibility to use kids in different events,” coach Scott Smith said. “It is also nice to have a chance to get a couple of different groups qualified as insurance in case of injury.”

Additional individual winners included Cooley in the 1600 meters with a time of 5:33.56, Kate Williams in the pole vault clearing 8-6, and Sanders winning the triple jump with a leap of 37-1 1/2.

“Paige has a great jumping day with two excellent jumps to go with being on two relays that automatically qualified,” Smith said. “It is nice to see how consistently she keeps improving.”

The Panther girls also had a number of top five finishes, as George placed second in the 400 meters (1:00.67), second in the long jump (15-10 1/2) and third in the 200 meters (1:00.67); Nalani Jordan was second in the discus (114-11) and third in the shot put (36-4); Shelby Zickefoose was third in the 1600 meters (5:36.87); Floy took third in the high jump (4-7); Ivy Lennon, Abigail Visocky and Lynea Christensen tied for third in the pole vault (6-6); Johnson was fourth in the 100 meters (13.26) and fifth in the 200 meters (27.83); Anyston Keller was fourth in the 1600 meters (5:52.18); Visocky was fourth in the 400 meter hurdles (52.85) and fifth in the 100 meter hurdles (18.06); Cooley was fifth in the 800 meters (2:33.39) and Keylyn Knuth was fifth in high jump (4-7).

As a team the Panther girls won the team title for a second straight week, this time by a larger margin than last, as the Panthers won with 178 points, 32 3/4 more points than second placed Worland.

“Team scores are a nice indicator how we did as a group but don’t tell all,” Smith said. “Cody barely had anyone there as it is their spring break, and Lovell only had half a team because of eligibility. But beating Campbell County and Worland at full strength was really nice.”

After taking the rest of the Easter weekend to rest, the Panthers return to action this week, hosting the LA Kohnke Powell Invitational on Saturday.

Field events begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, with the 1600 sprint medley relay at 9:15 a.m. and the 4x800 relay at 9:30 a.m. before the rest of the track events begin at 11 a.m.
