Regionals in Pinedale

Ending the regular season in less than ideal conditions on the road in Cody the Powell High School girls’ track and field team finished second to the Fillies, all while competing in rainy conditions on Thursday.

“The stop, warm up, stop again was hard for all, but good preparation for if we run into those delays at regionals and state,” coach Scott Smith said.

The Panthers had plenty of individual first place finishes in Cody, totaling six on the day and adding one relay win.

Paige Sanders was the lone two event winner, as she won the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 6 3/4 inches, and the triple jump with a leap of 36-10 3/4.

Kaytlee George took the win in the 200 meters with a time of 26.93 seconds, Lynea Christensen won the 400 meters in 1 minute, 3.49 seconds, Anyston Keller won the 1600 meters in 5:34.66 and Karee Cooley took the 3200 meters in 11:48.58.

Sanders, Christensen, Keller and George claimed the 4x400 relay title with a 4:13.55, giving the Panthers a third qualifying team in the event.

Panthers taking second place  included Ashlee Jacobsen who took second in the 100 meter dash (13.36), Audrey Johnson in the 200 meters (27.26), Cooley in the 800 meters (2:25.45), Abigail Visocky in the 100 meter hurdles (17.13), Keylyn Knuth tied for second in the high jump (4-9), Lucy Ostermiller in the triple jump (32-9) and Anai Torres in the discus (107-2).

Other top five finishes included Averie Warner who placed third in the 200 meters (27.89) and fifth in the 100 meters (27.89; Kate Williams was third in the pole vault (8-6); Kara Sanders placed third in the triple jump (31-7); Sam Edgell placed third in the shot put (33-11); Nyah Johnson took third in the discus (97-11) and fifth in shot put (33-1); Audrey Johnson took fourth in the 100 meters (13.44); Jacobsen took fourth in the 200 meters (28.68); Shelby Zickefoose placed fourth in the 800 meters (2:28.72); Visocky took fourth in the 300 meter hurdles (55.61); Kindyle Floy took fourth in the high jump (4-9) and fifth in the 200 meters (28.68) and Sharae Shoopman placed fourth in the discus (96-10).

“We had some young kids do a nice job of earning varsity spots for regionals but for a lot of our varsity kids we were using it as conditioning more than trying to get peak performances as we start getting ready for regionals,” Smith said.

As a team the Panthers finished with 225 points, 47 behind Cody. Lovell’s throwers also attended the meet and scored 37 points.

Now the Panthers make the trip to Pinedale, taking part in the 3A West Regional Track and Field Championships on Friday and Saturday.

Friday kicks off with field events at 1 p.m. quickly followed by the 800 meter final at 1:15 p.m. and then the remainder of the track events beginning at 1:40 p.m.

Saturday starts with field events at 9 a.m. and the 4x800 relay at 9:15 a.m. before a majority of finals begin at 10:10 a.m.

The final event, the 4x400 relay, is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start.

Those who have not automatically qualified for the state meet will need to place in the top eight individually; the Panthers have qualified all four relays.
