The Powell Panther girls’ track and field team tied for third place at the 3A West Regional meet at Powell High School on Friday and Saturday, adding new qualifiers while regional and school records fell.
Leading the way as the only two event winner for the Panthers was Audrey Johnson, who took the top spot in the 200 meters with a time of 26.33 seconds and the 400 meters with a time of 58.49 seconds.
Another Panther victor was Paige Sanders, who improved her newly set school record in triple jump by just over 5 inches, finishing with a leap of 37 feet, 5 1/2 inches.
The final win for Powell came in the 4x800 relay, where the team of Karee Cooley, Shelby Zickefoose, Kenna Jacobsen and Kinley Cooley set a new regional record of 9 minutes, 52.12 seconds, breaking the previous record set by Worland in 1996 by over three seconds.
“It was really exciting to see our kids continuing to break school records, but to see regional records from almost 30 years ago go down is really awesome,” coach Scott Smith said.
The Cooley sisters helped pace the Panthers in scoring over the weekend, as Kinley Cooley placed second in the 3200 meters (11:28.02) and third in the 800 meters (2:21.3); Karee Cooley placed third in the 1600 meters (5:22.38) and 3200 meters (11:28.54) as well as eighth in the 800 meters (2:25.13).
Powell also got additional top five finishes and added some new qualifiers in the process, as Kate Williams tied for third in the pole vault (9-0); Sanders got fourth in the long jump (16-8 1/2); Nalani Jordan placed fourth in both the shot put (36-10 1/4) and discus (122-7); Abigail Visocky took fifth in the 100 meter hurdles (17.27) and Anai Torres took fifth in the discus (120).
Additional state qualifiers included the 4x400 relay team of Kindyle Floy, Eleasah Horsley, Autumn Kidd and Johnson, which placed third with a time of 4:14.66; Averie Warner, who placed seventh in the 100 meter dash (13.25); and Shelby Zickefoose, with a qualifying time in the 3200 meters (12:02.63).
“It was nice to have as many prequalified kids as we did, but even better to get kids in by place at regionals,” Smith said. “The additional qualifiers we got gives us more chances to bring home state medals and I’m really happy for those kids that were able to earn their tickets to state.”
As a team the Panthers ended up with a third place finish, tying with Cody as both teams earned 118 points. Both teams were just 3.5 points behind Worland in second, as Lander ran away with the team title with 152 points.
STATE MEET
The Panthers now head to Casper to take part in the state championships starting Thursday.
Powell will take 20 individual marks as well as competitors in all four relays, hoping to compete for a spot on the podium against those same tough teams the Panthers just faced at the 3A West in addition to the 3A East champion Buffalo, which won its title by 64.5 points.
“Lander looks to be the favorite coming in, but after that it really will come down to which teams earn the most personal records,” Smith said.
The state meet kicks off Thursday at 2 p.m. with the 3200 meters alongside field events, running through Saturday afternoon with the conclusion of the meet with the 4x400 relay.
