Girls’ soccer dominates at home

Back at home the Powell High School girls’ soccer team continued to roll through mid-April, defeating Bridger Valley competition by a combined 16-2 scoreline, beating Lyman 9-0 on Friday and Mountain View 7-2 on Saturday.

POWELL 9, LYMAN 0

Returning from the quick road trip the Panthers (7-0 overall 4-0 3A West) took on the Eagles (0-4 overall, 0-3 3A West) on Friday.

Powell got off to a strong start behind Ivy Agee, who fired home a shot after it came back to her off a corner to make it 1-0 just five minutes in.

Aspen French added to the Panther lead shortly after, scoring on a strong shot to make it 2-0 with 31:21 left in the first half.

Not even a minute later Agee got her second, making it a 3-0 contest inside the first 10 minutes.

The Panthers continued to pressure but were unable to find the back of the net again in the first half and led 3-0 at the break.

Powell finally found the back of the net behind Tayler Tolman, who fired one home to make it 4-0 15 minutes into the second half.

“Our attack has been very diverse all year and only getting better,” coach Danny Agee said. “It’s great to see other girls scoring goals, but beyond that we are attacking as an entire team and that is opening up places all over the field for other players to score through.”

Ivy completed her hat-trick shortly after, firing another one home just three minutes later to make it 5-0.

An own goal by the Eagles went in after French’s shot was cleared off the line into the back of another Eagle player and bounced into the net to make it 6-0.

Jesi Agee added another from long range just 10 seconds after kickoff, as the Panthers made it 7-0.

French added to her total with another goal with 13 minutes remaining, as Ava Gilliatt capped off the scoring with 1:24 left to make it 9-0.

POWELL 7, MOUNTAIN VIEW 2

On Saturday the Panthers came up against a more difficult opponent, taking on the Buffalos (2-2 overall, 1-2 3A West).

French found the back of the net just over five minutes into the game.

Ivy got on the board seven minutes later, as the Panthers controlled the pace of play early and often.

A mistake at the back allowed for a breakaway by the Buffalos and they put it away to make it 2-1 with six minutes left.

Ivy got her second of the game shortly after to re-establish the two goal advantage, as the Panthers looked for a big second half after missing scoring opportunities in the first halves of both Friday and Saturday’s games.

“I honestly felt like we played very well in the first half of both games; we just didn’t capitalize when we should have,” coach Agee said. “I really think our conditioning and the pace in which we play is paying off. We are able to stretch teams and take advantage late in the game when they’re getting tired.”

Powell quickly scored in the second half through Mady Agee, who fired one home five minutes in.

Ivy completed her hat-trick five minutes later, before French added another a minute later to make it 6-1.

Gilliatt completed the flurry of goals just 10 seconds later to make it 7-1 before the Panthers controlled possession for much of the second half.

Mountain View got one more back before the end, scoring on another breakaway with 3:33 left to make the final score 7-2.

“We are going to keep working on trying to improve the pace and timing in which we play. The goal is to cycle the ball as quickly as possible, and if we lose it, I want us to urgently press to win the ball back as soon as possible,” coach Agee said.

CODY MATCHUP

Heading into the final month of the season the Panthers are faced with their toughest matchup to date, a state title rematch from a year ago.

Powell will head to Cody today (Tuesday) for the first of two regular season matchups against the Fillies (6-0 overall, 4-0 3A West).

“Cody is very strong athletically and they are always a difficult team to have to play, especially on the road,” coach Agee said. “I’m excited to see if we can take our pace and our possession to them and make them react to us. I believe if we make them play our game, we should be able to do well.”

The contest against the Fillies was originally scheduled for a 3 p.m. start, but has since been moved to a 7 p.m. start with the boys’ game before at 5 p.m.

“It’s a huge game for the ladies. It would be cool to have as much support as possible,” coach Agee said.
