Future looks bright as Powell youths make waves

Posted

I have been attempting to ensure Park County School District 1 and educational issues in general continue to have coverage in the Powell Tribune since the departure of our stellar education reporter last fall. But partly due to the incredible success of student groups and just the sheer amount of awesome things they do, I fear I have fallen hopelessly behind on coverage.

I’m working on it, but in the meantime a few shoutouts are in order, as we’ve had a few more state titles recently. Powell High School Speech and Debate grabbed one and is preparing to send kids to nationals, as did Skills USA.

Four speech and debate students were recognized at state, including Ryah Easum, impromptu; Katerina Reitz and Leanne Phillips, public forum; and Kyra Morrow, Lincoln-Douglas debate, and will be joined by Natalie Black, Curtis Muecke, Paige McConnell, Taylor Peters and Chloe Camp at nationals ths summer.

After listening to a few of them talk at a recent school board meeting, I can tell you No. 1, they are unsurprisingly well spoken, and No. 2, they are destined to do some pretty great things down the road, and I hope to see their names pop up in the future.

Skills USA had nine students qualify for state and five are headed to Atlanta this summer for nationals, including LeeAnne Phillips, prepared speech; Meisja McCrary, nurse assisting, and Nalani Jordan, Colin Walker and Mason Coombs in chapter display.

These students will, I’m sure, do well out east as it’s a bunch of really smart kids — both the valedictorian and salutatorian are part of the group — and will be great representatives for Powell.

And while I’m sure we all would love to have our children stay close after college or the early start to a career, or at least come back some day, it’s nice to think of the varied impact Powell students will be having on the world going forward.

To that end, with Northwest College having sent off its graduates Saturday, I think Powell is doing its part to prepare some great, talented students for the real world, wherever it leads them.
