If Powell residents hear fireworks on Saturday night, it likely won’t be from a belated New Year’s party, but a wedding celebration.
At a meeting earlier this month, the Powell City Council gave its blessing to a local couple who plan to shoot off some fireworks as they depart their Jan. 4 reception at the Park County Fairgrounds. It will be a roughly 10 to 20 minute display featuring three big and one small “cake” of pyrotechnics.
Bride-to-be Roseanne Spiering told the council that she and her fiance, Ben Seymour, have extensive experience with fireworks and will take safety precautions. She said the display will be “really brief” and finish by 10 p.m.
The plans were cleared by fairgrounds staff, Spiering said, but the couple needed the council’s permission to discharge fireworks, as those are otherwise banned in city limits.
Before the vote, Mayor John Wetzel suggested the couple aim to be done by 9 p.m.
“The neighbors kind of put up with fireworks over there but they don’t love them,” Wetzel said at the Dec. 2 meeting.
Ultimately, the mayor’s thought was not made a condition of the permit, which was unanimously approved by the council. A couple council members passed along their wishes for a great wedding day.
