One of two inmates who escaped from the Wyoming Honor Conservation Camp in Newcastle last week was captured in Texas on Sunday. The other inmate, however, remains at large.
Jason Green, 48, and Robert Simpson, 30, fled from the Newcastle camp on Sunday, Sept. 22. They stole a City of Newcastle truck to make their getaway before abandoning it in Laramie, where they may have stolen a Subaru, authorities have said.
The search had gone cold until Sunday morning, when police in Mesquite, Texas, received a report of a suspicious person early Sunday morning. Responding officers found two men running away. Green was apprehended by Mesquite officers, but the other man — believed to be Simpson — got away. Simpson may still be in the Mesquite and greater Dallas/Fort Worth area, authorities said Monday.
“It’s not certain at this time when Green will be returned to Wyoming and what additional charges he will face,” Wyoming Department of Corrections spokesman Mark Horan said in a Monday statement.
Prior to his escape, Green was serving a three- to eight-year sentence for larceny. Simpson, meanwhile, had been serving a five- to 15-year sentence for aggravated burglary with a weapon.
Simpson is 5 feet, 10 inches tall and approximately 165 pounds with blond hair and blue eyes. He has a scar on the bridge of his nose, on his right forearm and on his left hand. He has a tattoo of a domino and hell cat on his right arm with other tattoos on his chest, abdomen and back. He was last seen with a beard and sometimes has black glasses.
Texas authorities have asked that anyone with information about Simpson’s whereabouts call Crime Stoppers at 214-373-TIPS.
Simpson is also believed to have stolen a dog named Shadow — a black Lab mix — from the honor camp’s “Project LOVED” canine program. Corrections officials say they do not know where the dog is now.
