Equipment failure outside of Cody caused local outage

A roughly half-hour-long power outage that hit Powell and other parts of Park County on Wednesday afternoon was caused by a problem with the regional distribution line.

A piece of equipment failed at the Western Area Power Administration (WAPA)’s North Cody Substation, said Lisa Meiman, a spokeswoman for the administration; she said the failure basically had the same effect as tripping a circuit breaker.

“We needed to take a power line out of service so we could conduct emergency maintenance on that,” Meiman explained, adding that, “When the electricians arrived they were able to reroute the power to the unaffected power line and restore the power.”

Electrical users across the City of Powell, Garland, Ralston and other areas served by local utilities that draw their power from WAPA experienced an outage that lasted from roughly 2:25 p.m. to about 3 p.m.

Meiman said no additional outages are expected.

“The electricians are still working on the equipment,” she said Wednesday afternoon, “but we do not anticipate any further outages at this point.”
