Steve Lensegrav, Powell High School assistant principal, had the fastest duck in town Thursday. He took home the first prize in the annual Duck Race at the Powell Aquatic Center, which raises money for robotics clubs at PHS and Powell Middle School.
The event raised $2,000 from selling the rubber ducks, which were dropped in the pool’s lazy river. Each student who sells the rubber racers gets a portion of that money added to their individual accounts for robotics-related travel, which they must pay for out of their own pockets.
A portion of the proceeds goes to the club, which helps pay for entry fees at competitions, as well as parts of the robots. The machines have to be updated regularly, and with five Powell teams, it can be quite expensive.
In addition to the annual Duck Race, the clubs also raise money at the Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot.
For his winning duck, Lensegrav will enjoy $300 in prizes, including a 30-inch fire pit. Second place went to Stefani Hicswa, chancellor of Montana State University-Billings. She took home $200 in prizes, and PHS science teacher Kaitlyn Loeffen took third place, for $125 in prizes.
