Driving vehicles from decades past and present, local residents are reviving an old tradition: Dragging Main on Saturday night.
Organized by the online group Love Thy Neighbor — Powell, the Drag Main event started March 28 and has continued every weekend.
“We plan to do this indefinitely!” said Rhiannon Morlan, group administrator. “It just makes my heart happy to see that I am a part of what has brought the community spirit out!”
Participants meet at the former Shopko parking lot between 6:45-7 p.m. each Saturday. From there, the route proceeds down Coulter Avenue to Bent Street, then down Bent to the Union Presbyterian Church. Cars then turn around in the church parking lot and head back. The event usually continues until 9 p.m.
In addition to dozens of Powell residents, the Cody Country Car Show group also participates.
“It is really quite amazing how many come to enjoy this few hours,” Morlan said.
Those who don’t want to drive, but want to watch, park on Bent Street.
Last Saturday included the Howl for Powell group, so at 8 p.m., everyone on Main Street howled.
Organizers encourage people to remain in their vehicles so they can practice safe social distancing.
“People that get out have been great about respecting the 6-feet rule and/or wearing masks,” Morlan said.
As a registered nurse who is also immunocompromised, Morlan said it is important to her and she has advised everyone to remain in vehicles.
“I can’t control those that DO choose to be out of their cars, however,” she said.
Local businesses have participated in the Drag Main event, as WYOld West Brewing Company organized an Easter egg giveaway and Pizza On the Run will be offering a special this weekend during the event.
