It had been building: the notion of payback in the series between Douglas and Powell football.
The Panthers, after all, had won four straight games against the Bearcats, including a 25-2 win in last year’s season opener and a 19-13 Powell victory in the 2013 state title game.
That payback certainly came, as Douglas darted out to a commanding first-half lead on its way to a 41-6 win.
“We came in missing some people,” Panther head coach Chanler Buck said. “That affected how we operate and they got a lot of momentum going early.”
Big plays put points on the board for the Bearcats on the way to five touchdowns in the first half and a 35-0 lead at intermission.
From there, however, Powell made a contest of it, halting the momentum and shutting down the big plays.
Zach Easum got the Panthers on the board, powering past the line and then breaking out in a 65-yard run with three minutes left in the third.
Douglas would add one more touchdown, but did not convert the extra point. That provided the final margin and allowed Powell to play the Bearcats even in the second half, 6-6.
“It was just a slow start for us and we got in too big a hole,” Buck said. “(Douglas) will be a very good team and in the second half it was a very good contest. We just have to get ourselves healthy and take the positives from how we played in the second half.”
It will be another tough test this week, as the Panthers travel to Buffalo for a 7 p.m. start Friday against a Bison squad that beat Cody on the road 27-21.
