Dear editor:
Powell resident Bruce Hicks complained in his letter to the editor (Dec. 31) that he has found gasoline and diesel fuel prices higher in Powell vs. Lovell and Cody. His contention is that because of the price differences, he will, and others might, drive to Lovell and Cody for shopping and to purchase fuel.
I believe that it behooves all of us to support our own community, despite higher prices for fuel. One reason is that although one could save a few cents per gallon, it is important to realize that the wear and tear on a person’s vehicle, including tires, more than likely offsets saving some pennies. Also, it should be noted that, with all due respect, Powell businesses by and large employ Powell citizens, thereby aiding the economy.
As well, Powell businesses support “local” events and causes. Plus, shopping elsewhere takes time. Overall, it strikes me that making a 60-mile or so round trip to save money doesn’t make sense. It reminds me of the adage about cutting off your nose to spite your face.
