Cubs start strong in Burlington

Spring weather broke through for the Powell Middle School track and field teams to get out and impress in Burlington on Saturday, as both the Cub boys’ teams as well as the eighth grade girls took the team titles while the seventh grade girls were fifth in the first meet of the season.

The eighth grade boys were led by four individual first place finishes, as Tyler Cole won the 100 meter hurdles in 17.96 seconds and the 200 meter hurdles in 30.62 seconds, while Carter Gambill won the high jump clearing 5 feet, 6 inches.

Also winning was the 4x400 relay team of Arthur Crawford, Kendall Matthews, Colson Sherman and Xander Whitlock with a time of 4:51.94 and the 800 sprint medley team of Cole, Gambill, Kayde Northrup and Zaiden Powell won with a time of 1:59.7.

The Cubs also had a number of runner-up finishes, as Gambill was second in the 100 meter dash (12.82); Matthews was second in the 400 meters (1:00.16) and the 800 meters (2:31.23); Bret Clausen was second in the 200 meter hurdles (33.57); Cole was second in the triple jump (34-9 1/2) and Dawson Engesser was second in the shot put (35-7).

The eighth grade boys took the team title with 146 points, 22 ahead of second placed Burlington.

The seventh grade boys’ team had three individual first place finishes, as Kayson Brown won the 200 meter dash (27.89), Ethan Kennedy won the 1600 meters (5:37.14) and Manti Jeide won the 100 meter hurdles (19.46).

Both relays also won for the seventh grade boys, as the 4x400 team of Allan Fisk, Cyrus Graham, Keaton Keller and Kaile Lasson won with a time of 4:59.21, while the 800 sprint medley team of Carson Basso, Jeide, Kennedy and Jake Williams won with a time of 2:37.29.

The seventh grade boys also had several second place finishes, as Lasson was second in the 100 meter hurdles (19.69); Graham was second in the long jump (15-1 1/2); Williams was second in the triple jump (29-11 1/4) and Lasson was second in the shot put (27-10).

As a team the seventh graders finished with 116 points, 10.5 ahead of second placed Burlington.

On the girls’ side, the eighth grade Cubs were paced by five individual first place finishes.

Three of those came from Maci MaGill, who won the 100 meters (13.87), 200 meters (28.58) and the triple jump (30-0 1/2) while the other two came from Aubree Kraft, who won the 800 meters (2:37.84) and the 1600 meters (5:54.13).

Both relay teams also claimed the top spots, as the team of Beth Black, Callie Foos, Kraft and Sophie Villanueva won the 4x400 in 5:01.15, and the 800 sprint medley team of Harlow Crow, Teagan Gillett, MaGill and Iyla Whitlock won with a time of 2:14.52.

Second place finishes came from Foos in the 800 meters (2:53.73); Finley Franklin in the 100 meter hurdles (21.03); Addi Fetter in the 200 meter hurdles (37.58); Gillett in the triple jump (29-0 1/2) and Tabbetha Turner in the shot put (26-9).

As a team the eighth grade Cubs finished with 173.5 points, 23.5 ahead of second placed Burlington.

The seventh grade girls had two first place finishes, both coming from Jade Miller, who won the 100 meters in 14.78 seconds and the 200 meters in 29.94 seconds.

Additional top three finishes came from Malina Anderson who took second in the discus (57-4); Lilly Lennen took third in the 400 meters (1:18.36) and Miller placed third in the long jump (12-7 1/2).

Overall the Cub girls finished with 63 points, with Rocky Mountain taking the top spot with 114.

The Cubs are scheduled to continue the early season with a meet today (Thursday) with a home triangular against Cody and Lovell at 2 p.m. at Powell Middle School.
