The Powell Middle School track team is well rested heading into its home meet this weekend after having last weekend off from the track due to the Cody Middle School meet being canceled.
The eighth grade boys and girls have run away in their first two meets of the year, with both teams holding new school records in the 4x100 and several qualifying marks for the Best of the Best meet at season’s end in Lander.
The seventh grade squads both won the opening meet before both finishing second in Lovell, with each garnering several qualifying marks for the Best of the Best meet as well.
The Powell Athletic Roundtable Track Invitational will be held at Powell High School on Saturday starting at 9:30 a.m. and will welcome several teams from around the Big Horn Basin.
Due to forecasted weather conditions Chanler Buck, the Powell Middle School athletic director, said pole vault, high jump and discus will not take place Saturday. He said teams will record those events at their home facilities early next week to get additional marks before the conference meet.
Field events will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the track events beginning at 10:30 a.m. with the 1600 meters.
Track events will start with seventh grade girls, followed by eighth grade girls then seventh grade boys and eighth grade boys.
This will be the final regular season meet for the Cubs before heading to Thermopolis next Saturday for the conference meet, with the Best of the Best meet the following Tuesday to cap off the track season.
