Several school records fall

After winning a pair of conference titles the Powell Middle School girls’ track and field teams ended on an even higher note at the Best of the Best meet in Lander on Tuesday, May 13, where both teams recorded a number of top finishes and the seventh grade girls set several new records.

“As coaches, our primary goal is to see growth and improvement throughout the season and this group of athletes delivered on that in every way,” coach Amanda Haney said. “It was inspiring to watch them push each other, stay motivated and commit themselves to becoming better every day. Once they began to recognize their own potential, they rose to the occasion and set high standards for themselves.”

Leading the way for the seventh grade team was Maci MaGill, who set a pair of new school records, winning the 200 meters in 27.72 seconds and the 400 meters in 1 minute, 1.93 seconds.

In addition to the individual records, MaGill was part of another record setting team, as the 4x100 relay team of MaGill, Kimber Allan, Ryleigh Hutzenbieler and Autumn Kleinfeldt won with a time of 54.54 seconds.

That was not only a school record, but also a Best of the Best record.

In addition to MaGill, the seventh grade Cubs added a number of top five finishes, including Finley Franklin, who placed second in the high jump clearing 4 feet, 8 inches; Kleinfeldt placed second in pole vault (7-6), third in the triple jump (30-2) and fifth in the 100 meter dash (14.08); Charlee Muecke took second in the discus (77); Aubree Kraft took third in the 400 meters (1:04.86), 800 meters (2:37.12) and 1600 meters (5:43.35); MaGill placed fourth in the triple jump (29-6) and Teagan Gillett took fifth in the triple jump (29-4).

For the eighth graders, the Cubs posted one individual win, as Anyston Keller took the top spot in the 1600 meters with a time of 5:35.33.

Powell also took the top spot in the 4x400 relay, as the quartet of Keylyn Knuth, Kara Sanders, Landyn Horsley and Keller won with a time of 4:32.07.

Additional top five finishes for the eighth grade girls included Lynea Christensen who took second in the 400 (1:03.38) and third in high jump (4-6); Keller placed second in the 800 meters (2:35.15); Knuth placed second in the high jump (4-8); Sanders placed third in the 400 meters (1:04.5) and triple jump (30-7 1/2) while Addie Gillett placed fifth in the 400 meters (1:05.74).

Haney said this was the most  athletes Powell Middle School has taken to the Best of the Best, with at least one qualifier in every event.

No team scores were kept at the Best of the Best.
