The Powell Middle School boys’ track and field teams finished in the middle of the pack at a difficult home meet, as the eighth grade Cubs finished third and the seventh grade team finished fifth.
Leading the way for the eighth grade boys was a pair of individual wins and one relay win.
Those two wins came in field events, as Karzten Carter won the high jump clearing 5 feet, 2 inches, and Justin Marquez won the shot put with a throw of 44 feet, 5 inches.
“Our throwers have really stepped up,” coach Amanda Haney said. “They are consistently placing and giving us a solid foundation at every competition. With their hard work at practice and technical improvements, the throwers are proving to be a vital part of the teams’ achievements this season.”
The one relay win came in the 4x100, as the quartet of Russell Goolsbey, Marquez, Harper Havron and Forest Kleinfeldt won in a time of 50.08 seconds.
Other top three finishes included Havron, who took second in the 200 meters (25.41) and first in the 100 meters (12.62); Goolsbey took second in the triple jump (31-11 1/4); Kleinfeldt placed third in the 400 meters (1:00.08) and Isaiah Torres took third in the 1600 meters (5:25.18).
In the team standings the Cubs earned 93 points, just one ahead of Cody with 92 but behind both Sheridan teams which earned over 100 points.
The seventh graders were unable to earn any first place finishes either individually or as a team, but two Cubs earned second place finishes.
Those came from Kendall Matthews in the 800 meters (2:37.6) and Tucker McDonald in the pole vault (7-6).
The 4x100 relay of Ryder DeBoer, Auzzy Carter, McDonald and Carter Gambill took second with 54.97.
Other top three individual finishes for the seventh grade team included Rhett Goolsbey in the triple jump (29-6 1/2) and Sawyer Petersen in the discus (78-5).
“Both girls’ and boys’ teams come to practice with a strong work ethic and a genuine desire to improve,” Haney said. “They trust their coaches and are committed to applying the technical details being taught to help them grow as athletes. Throughout the season they have consistently motivated one another, creating a positive and supportive environment not only during practice but also at meets. This team-first attitude has played a key role in their ongoing success and development.”
The seventh graders finished fifth with 61.5 points, as Riverton took the team title with 107 points.
Powell now heads on the road for its final regular season meet, making the trip to Lovell on Saturday.
“We are really emphasizing the little details whether it’s starts, handoffs or technical form in the field events,” Haney said.
The Cubs will then head to the Big Horn Conference Meet next Saturday, May 10, in Thermopolis.
