The Park County commissioners approved mill levy requests as required Aug. 5.
With a $851 million valuation, down from over $1 billion the last couple of years, it means less money for each entity receiving mills.
“In a nutshell, the value of a mill is worth around 18% lower,” commissioner Lloyd Thiel said in response to Assessor Terry Call’s presentation. “It isn’t really good news but it is what it is.”
As usual, most organizations are asking for the full amount of mills they are legally allowed to take. For instance, the county’s 12 mills amounts to $10.2 million in revenue, down from more than $12 million the year prior.
While the county can decide to receive less than its allowed 12 mills — two years ago there was some discussion about doing so when the county valuation was over $1 billion — commissioners cannot alter requests from other districts.
Park County Fire District 1 in Powell is receiving $666,000 for its three mills and Cody fire $1.43 million for its three. Mills are based on the total valuation in each district.
Only the county cemetery districts are taking less than the max amount of mills allowed.
The largest, Riverside in Cody, upped its request from 1.5 mills last year to 2.5 mills this year to receive roughly $300,000 more than last year at a total of $1.07 million.
Powell’s Crown Hill dropped its request from 2.28 to 1.516 mills, down from receiving just over $600,000 in revenue last year to $333,000 this year.
The Meeteetse Cemetery District is asking for 1 mill, down from 1.01 mill last year, resulting in it receiving $116,000, roughly $8,000 less than last year.
Bennett Buttes Cemetery District in Clark, like Cody, upped its mill request this year to 1.326 mills from .43 mills, and will receive just over $24,000 after receiving $10,000 last year.
The Deaver/Frannie Cemetery District, which received a full 3 mills last year and $48,000, reduced its request to 2.2 mills to receive $34,000.
