Cora Celia Thornberry, 91, a resident of Avante’ of Harrisonburg, Va., died March 13, 2011.
A daughter of the late Ira S. and Marie Rosemeck Curtis, she was born on June 29, 1919, in Parsons, Kan.
In 1926 she moved to Powell, and graduated from Powell High School in 1938. While living in Powell, she worked as a secretary to a grade school principal from 1949 until 1962; then moved to St. Paul, Minn., where she was a secretary to the Bethel College Registrar.
In 1984, Cora moved to Warrenton, Mo., and became active in the Child Evangelism Fellowship and did missionary work in Kenya, Africa, Mexico City, Mexico, and Newark, N.J. In 1990, while still with Child Evangelism Fellowship, she moved to St. Petersburg, Fla, and lived at the Bradenton Missionary Village. In September, 2010, Cora came to Harrisonburg, Va., to be near her son.
On Feb. 4, 1939, she married Earl Joseph Thornberry, who preceded her in death on Aug. 29, 1947. Surviving are two sons, Wesley Earl Thornberry of Grottoes, Va., and Kenneth Dean Thornberry of McDonough, Ga.; six grandchildren; and 12 great-granchildren.
Her body was cremated at the Lindsey Cremation Chapel in Harrisonburg. A graveside service will be held in Powell at a later date.
