Competitors sought for talent show to benefit Special Olympics

Compete for a Cause, a talent show and fundraising event, is returning to Cody for a second year.

The competition is open to performers of any age and to all talents, with prizes awarded for each age group, plus an overall winner and people’s choice. To land a spot in the show, video auditions must be sent to compete4cause@gmail.com by Wednesday, July 8.

All proceeds from the 2020 Compete for a Cause will go to Special Olympics Wyoming, with the specific intent of honoring 16-year-old Emma Foley of Cody.

As a baby, Foley was diagnosed with a rare liver disease called biliary atresia and she underwent her first surgery at 7 1/2 weeks of age. Emma has also had other medical needs involving her heart, ears, ongoing liver issues and more. She’s now endured more than 40 surgeries and procedures and has significant delays in all areas.

“There was a time when her parents were told ‘she will never walk or talk,’ however Emma does walk and talk, and she continues to learn and progress,” Compete for a Cause organizer Brooke Grant said in a news release. “Emma never gives up.”

She said Foley “loves everything about life,” including people, animals, sports, dancing, reading and the great outdoors.

“Emma has had numerous challenges in her 16 years; however, she is always happy and positive,” Grant said. “Her family calls her ‘the light’ because she always shines and is a beacon of hope through any darkness.”

Special Olympics is a big part of Foley life. Each year she participates in swimming, basketball, skiing, snowshoeing and track.

The live Compete for a Cause show is set for 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8 at the Wynona Thompson Auditorium in Cody. Donations will be accepted at the door.

In 2019, the show raised funds for a Cody baby who had to undergo corrective surgery after being born with a condition that required corrective surgery.

“Last year was a huge success,” Grant said, “and we are thrilled to be back on stage!”
