Cody teen facing charges after theft, tire slashing

Cody police say a teen stole items from a vehicle and slashed the tires on another one last month. Court records show police are also probing whether 18-year-old Camren Walk was responsible for an auto burglary that took place in early September.

Walk is currently charged with misdemeanor counts of theft and property destruction. They relate to a theft from a downtown vehicle on the night of Sept. 17 and the puncture of two tires on another vehicle on or before the morning of Sept. 27.

Walk has entered not guilty pleas to both offenses. As of Monday, he was being held in the Park County Detention Center, with bail set at a combined total of $10,000, cash or surety.

The slashed tires were reported around 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 27 and the driver of the 2010 Toyota RAV4 named Walk as a potential suspect, charging documents say.

Cody police found Walk that afternoon and arrested him on suspicion of possessing drug paraphernalia, tobacco and an e-cigarette. When officers then searched him, they found a folding knife that appeared to match the slash marks on the RAV4’s tires, charging documents say. Additionally, police say they found a power bank that appeared to have been stolen from a vehicle back on the night of Sept. 17. Two bank deposit bags containing $903 in cash were also reportedly stolen from the vehicle, which had been parked behind Domino’s Pizza.

Surveillance camera footage of the incident showed one male rummaging through the vehicle — police allege that was Walk — while another male apparently kept a lookout, charging documents say. He’s alleged to have tried multiple vehicle doors before eventually running away. Police say the shoes seen in the footage appear to match the ones Walk was wearing at the time of his Sept. 27 arrest.

A later application for a search warrant indicates that police are still investigating whether Walk was responsible for a similar auto burglary that occurred in the Domino’s lot on Sept. 3. In that instance, someone stole a brown wallet.

Cody Police Officer Jamie McCloud wrote that, just like the Sept. 17 incident, the suspect was a slender male wearing a light-colored hoodie and a black backpack. McCloud’s affidavit persuaded Park County Circuit Court Judge Joey Darrah to allow a search of Walk’s phone. No charges had been filed in connection with that incident as of Friday.

Following his Sept. 27 arrest, Walk allegedly told his mother that he had punctured the tires on the RAV4.

“I was just going to take out the air valve,” Walk allegedly said on a recorded call from the Park County Detention Center, “... but then the anger got a hold of me and I just slashed the tires.”

Walk initially indicated that he would admit to the property destruction charge.

“I’m pretty guilty of the crime,” he said at a Friday hearing.

However, after Darrah warned that a guilty plea would prohibit him from speaking with an attorney, Walk decided to instead plead not guilty.

“It’s probably better,” Darrah said, “and you need to be careful what you say, OK? Because it can be used against you.”

Trials on the two misdemeanor charges were tentatively set for later this year.
