Some residents and businesses on Powell’s south side were left without water service on Wednesday morning and early afternoon following a broken water main.
The break was reported on South Evarts Street around 5:45 a.m. City Administrator Zack Thorington described it as a stress fracture caused by shifting ground amid the subzero temperatures. The main line in that area may have been more vulnerable to the freezing and thawing, he said, as it’s not quite as deep.
City customers on Evarts, south Gilbert, south Ferris and South streets were impacted by the break, Thorington said. The broken line was repaired before 2 p.m. and service was set to be fully restored shortly after that.
“Obviously, these aren’t quick fixes,” Thorington said, with water department crews needing to jackhammer through multiple feet of frost.
He added that the crews “work through lunches and dinners and whatever else” to fix these kinds of service disruptions.
It was the second water main break this month, with the other on Day Street.
