Charles Virgil Hawkins, 83, died Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011 in the Powell Valley Care Center.

He was born Feb. 2, 1928 in Pinedale, Ariz., the seventh of 10 children of Alma and Cora Bloomfield Hawkins.

He graduated from High School in Gallup, N.M. Charles served an LDS mission to the East Central United States at the age of 19. He earned his Master’s degree in Education at Brigham Young University. He served as a carpentry instructor in the U.S. Army at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

On Oct.10, 1952 he married Olive Cozzens in the Salt Lake City Temple. He was an administrator and teacher in Gallup, N.M. for four years before settling with his family in Cody in 1959 and teaching school there for another 15 years.

Charles also worked for many years for various construction companies, and he annually raised acres of garden and fruit trees to feed his family.

Charles is survived by all seven of his children: Bruce (Colleen) of Bentonville, Ark.; Joe (Deniece) of Orem, Utah; Lynette (Ned) Kelley of Cody; Kent (Maureen) of Pocatello, Idaho; Brent (Leslie) of West Jordan, Utah; Mark (Susan) of Mesa, Ariz.; and Lonnie (Greg) Clark of Powell; 37 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; two brothers, George and Paul Hawkins of Utah, and many nieces and nephews. His wife, Olive, died in December 2007.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 13, at 10 a.m. at the LDS Church on Wyoming Avenue in Cody.

Visitation with family will be one hour prior to the services at the church. Interment will be at Crown Hill Cemetery in Powell.

Thompson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
