Changes coming to high school sports

Posted

High school sports will have a new look this year in a number of ways, with a couple of reclassification changes occurring that will affect several fall sports immediately as golf and tennis kick off the season with practices on Aug. 10.

That change came officially across all sports, as the Wyoming High School Activities Association determined that it would revert to the former model, and affect the quadrant Powell High School currently plays in.

The new model puts the largest 16 teams in 4A for all sports except football, followed by the next 16 in 3A, then the next 18 in 2A and the remainder in 1A.

Current Average Daily Membership numbers place Powell as the biggest 3A school for all sports, with an ADM of 531.49, just ahead of Douglas which is 13 behind the Panthers.

Those two schools are the only two over 500 that participate in all 3A sports.

Just ahead of the Panthers is local rival Cody, who is the smallest school in 4A for a majority of sports with an ADM of 610.9, 86 behind Green River which is the next smallest.

That means to start the year, the Panthers will no longer have to compete against the Fillies or Broncs in golf, cross country, volleyball or swimming in the postseason.

Tennis will remain the same as there is only one classification, and football remains unchanged in the fall and will follow the previous model of 10 4A teams, 12 3A teams, 16 2A teams, 12 1A 9-man teams and the remainder in 1A 6-man.

Overall for the 3A West, the subtraction of Cody means the Panthers need one new opponent in their conference, as Lander returns to the 3A Northwest quadrant and Rawlins slides into the 3A Southwest to replace the Tigers.

The one fresh face to 3A this upcoming year for all sports they participate in aside from football will be Tongue River, who will join the 3A East in its first year.

Returning to 3A in football is Worland, which will replace Torrington in the 3A East. Powell is the seventh largest 3A football school, with Jackson the largest ADM school with 876.23.

Buffalo is the smallest 3A football school at 325.13.

Future sports affected by the new reclassification model include basketball, wrestling, track and soccer.

Although rivalries won’t count as conference matchups in a number of sports, scheduled events against the Fillies and Broncs are still very much in the future.
