Habitat for Humanity home nearly complete

The anticipation has everyone at Mountain Spirit Habitat for Humanity buzzing, especially the family that is going to move into the new home on North Day Street.

“The house is just gorgeous. The homeowner, Beth (Jolley), is excited. Her kids are excited,” said Nikki Hoellwarth, Mountain Spirit executive director. “We’re all just really anxious for it to happen.”

The family would be moving in right now were it not for the appliances. Lead times on manufacturing goods are stretching out with supply lines and factories disrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The nonprofit ordered everything from Sears, and now it’s just a matter of waiting for delivery.

“It’s literally the only thing left to do,” Hoellwarth said.

Jolley’s kids wrote thank you letters and drew pictures for the volunteers who participated in the construction. Hoellwarth said she got a little choked up making copies for everyone.

“It was just so sweet. I started to cry,” she said.

Smooth Edge Custom Construction is the contractor, and the company was willing to work with volunteers — something the project required.

Mountain Spirit took a new approach with the volunteers, which Hoellwarth said worked out really well. They had five volunteer days with specific jobs that were volunteer friendly. They wrapped the house in Tyvek. They installed doors and windows. They installed the inside insulation, and they did the interior painting.

“It made the experience so much better for everyone,”  Hoellwarth said. “It was good for the contractor. It was good for the volunteers, because they came in and knew exactly what they were doing.”

She said it went so well they plan to use the same system for future builds.

Most recently, SWI Fence and Supply put up a security fence around the property, entirely for free. Hoellwarth estimates it was a $15,000 donation in materials and labor.

When the appliances are installed, which Habitat leaders hope will be soon, they plan to hand over the keys to Jolley during a dedication ceremony. The public will be invited to see the finished home.
