The Powell Panthers rolled past the visiting Thermopolis Bobcats 58-22 Thursday night before several Panthers made the trip to Greybull on Saturday to gain experience in the final tournament of the regular season.
POWELL 58, THERMOPOLIS 22
Kicking off the week on Thursday the Panthers welcomed in the Bobcats, with slightly less bouts in the dual than expected.
“We had a couple more forfeits in there than what we had anticipated, but, it is what it is,” coach Nick Fulton said.
Powell started with a 6-0 lead after a forfeit to Talon Nuss at 106 pounds, before Thermopolis responded with a pin of Wyatt Nicholson in the third period at 113 pounds to tie the score 6-6.
Channing Wenzel got a forfeit win at 120 pounds, before Chevy Hill earned a 13-1 major decision win at 126 to make it 16-6 Powell.
Tyler Wenzel was pinned with 1:11 left in the first period at 132 pounds before Kash Brazelton mirrored that with a pin with 1:11 left in the first period at 138 pounds to maintain the lead.
Chase Visocky kept things rolling at 144 pounds, pinning his opponent with 1:05 left in the second period after trailing 3-1 heading into the period.
Thermopolis got the win at 150 pounds as Reese Lowe was pinned with 33 seconds left in the second period.
The match of the night came at 157 pounds, as a back-and-forth match saw Cody Seifert leading 10-7 after the first period.
He finished off the match in the second with a pin with 33 seconds left in the period to make it 34-18.
“Cody had a good match. The kid took him out of position a couple times, twice actually, but Cody was able to battle through that and come back and get a pin there,” Fulton said. “For all my guys, when things don’t go their way or the way they anticipate, they don’t panic. They stay in the match and end up finishing the job.”
McKale Foley got the forfeit win at 165 pounds, before Thermopolis got its final win of the night at 175 pounds with a 10-2 major decision of Mitchel Wainscott.
Dusty Carter got the final win of the night at 190 pounds, getting the pin with 1:08 left in the first period before two forfeit wins to Jacob Eaton and Doug Bettger at 215 and 285 pounds made the final score 58-22.
“There were some good matches all the way up and down the lineup,” Fulton said. “They’ve got some good kids, some really top end kids. Definitely a quality opponent, so that was a good outing from the varsity picking up the win there.”
GREYBULL TOURNAMENT
Heading to Greybull for a quick tournament the Panthers took a lot of younger athletes as well as guys who had been injured throughout the year to get them additional experience before the postseason.
Nuss was the highest placer for the Panthers, taking third after going 1-1 at 106 pounds.
“He wrestled pretty well, just getting him mat time, getting him sharpened for the regional and state tournament,” Fulton said. “Really high expectations for him, and he has high expectations for himself.”
The other placer for the Panthers was Brazelton, who went 3-2 and took fourth.
“He’s been out with an injury, through kind of the middle of the season. He just needed some mat time, it paid off,” Fulton said.
Four other Panthers finished 2-2, including Channing Wenzel at 120 pounds, Reese Lowe at 150 pounds, Michael Legerski at 165 pounds and James Emmett at 215 pounds.
“James is doing a good job there at 215, he’s winning matches,” Fulton said. “Channing, he’s somebody that wrestled quite a bit throughout his life, and some techniques are starting to click for him. Picked up a couple good wins there … Michael is not necessarily young. He’s a senior, but he’s only wrestled for two years, and he was awfully competitive this weekend. Proud of his performance.”
Other competitors in Greybull were Dylan DeBoer who went 1-2 at 120 pounds; Sean Lowe went 0-2 at 126 pounds; Garrett Brazelton went 0-2 at 132 pounds; Tanner Seifert went 0-2 at 138 pounds and Jayce Lejeune went 0-2 at 144 pounds.
Overall Powell finished ninth as a team with 50 points, as Moorcroft won with 214.5 points.
CODY DUAL
Wrapping up the regular season the Panthers will stay at home, welcoming in their Park County rivals the Cody Broncs on Thursday.
“That should be a pretty fun dual,” Fulton said. “They’ve got some guys in there in the middle weights that they’ll be favored in, and we’ll probably be favored more in the lighter weights and upper weights. Kids have just got to go wrestle the matches. It’ll be an interesting one … It’s fun, it’s a rivalry dual and they do a good job over there.”
That dual is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start at Powell High School.
