Valiant efforts saw the Powell Middle School boys’ track and field teams battle at the Yellowstone Conference meet in Worland on Saturday, with the eighth grade boys’ team finishing second and the seventh grade boys’ team finishing third.

Leading the way for the eighth grade boys was a pair of individual winners, as Karzten Carter won the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 2 inches, and Justin Marquez won the shot put with a throw of 43 feet, 2 inches.

Despite only having two winners, the Cubs had a number of second place finishes to help bring in significant points, as Isaiah Torres took second in the 800 meters with a time of 2 minutes, 23.84 seconds, and the 1600 meters with a time of 5:24.54, while Russell Goolsbey took second in the pole vault clearing 8-0 and the triple jump with a leap of 33-6 3/4.

Other top five finishes for the eighth grade Cubs included Harper Havron, who took third in the 100 meter dash (12.69) and 200 meters (26.55); Forest Kleinfeldt placed third in the 400 meters (58.64), third in the triple jump (33-0 1/4) and fourth in the 200 meters (27.04); Goolsbey took third in the 800 meters (2:27.25); Torres tied for third in the long jump (16-6); Morgan Rodriguez placed fourth in the shot put (36-8 1/2) and fifth in the triple jump (32-1 1/4); Marquez placed fifth in the 400 meters (1:01.6) and Wyatt Hill placed fifth in the high jump (4-10).

Powell earned 144.5 points as a team, behind winner and host Worland which finished with 177 points, but well ahead of third placed Lander which had 80.5 points.

“We were really proud of our eighth grade boys. Finishing second in such a competitive field is a big accomplishment,” coach Amanda Haney said. “They showed a lot of heart and have tons of potential in the future. It’s exciting to see that kind of effort and teamwork at this level.”

The seventh grade Cubs also had two individual winners in Worland, as Carter Gambill won the high jump clearing 5-5 and Tucker McDonald won the pole vault clearing 8-6.

Powell also got one relay win, as Ryder DeBoer, Auzzy Carter, Zaiden Powell and Kendall Matthews won the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:36.18.

The Cubs did not have any second place finishes, but other top five finishes included McDonald, who took third in the 100 meter hurdles (18.08) and the high jump (4-11); Matthews was third in the pole vault (7-6) and fifth in the 800 meters (2:35.27); James Heny took third in the discus (86-2); Gambill placed fourth in the 400 meters (1:02.97); Bret Clausen took fourth in the 200 meter hurdles (33.69); Rhett Goolsbey took fourth in the triple jump (30-2 3/4) and fifth in pole vault (7-0) while Ryder Tomash took fifth in the 200 meter hurdles (33.9).

As a team the seventh grade Cubs earned 113 points, close behind second placed Riverton with 117.5 while Worland ran away with the team title with 163 points.

“The seventh grade boys showed tremendous growth throughout the season,” Haney said. “It is exciting to see how far they have come, and exciting to see what they’ll accomplish moving forward.”
