Boys’ track adds two new qualifiers

Posted

New qualifying times highlighted a strong home performance for the Powell High School boys’ track and field team at the LA Kohnke Invitational on Saturday, as the Panthers placed second as a team and added two new qualifiers to the state team.

Those new qualifiers were Dayton Lawrence and Lincoln Crawford, as Lawrence finished fifth in the pole vault and cleared 12 feet, while Crawford was seventh in the 110 meter hurdles and qualified with a time of 16.71 seconds.

“It was a pleasant surprise to see Dayton with a 1-1/2 foot personal best in his first meet to qualify and great to see Dayton get automatically qualified into a headwind. He’s starting to look better and better each week,” coach Scott Smith said.

Braxton Nelson again had a strong day for the Panthers, winning the high jump clearing 6-7 while also winning the long jump with a leap of 22-1 1/2.

The final win for the Panthers came in the 4x100 relay, as the team of Breckyn Kobbe, David Stearns, Karcher Foley and Cobey Khan won with a time of 44.45 seconds and became the third combination to qualify in the 4x100 for the boys’ team.

Additional top eight Panther finishes included Nelson who took second in the 100 meter dash (11.31); Korbyn Warren took third in the 1600 meters (4:49.76) and fourth in the 800 meters (2:11.87); Sawyer Wormald was third in the 110 meter hurdles (16.13) and fourth in the 300 meter hurdles (39.81); Foley was fifth in the 200 meters (23.73) and sixth in the long jump (19-7 3/4); Stearns was sixth in the 200 meters (23.87); Troy Cheatham tied for seventh in the pole vault (11-6); Kaden Wolff was seventh in the discus (117-10) and Brayden Benander was eighth in the 400 meters (54.08).

As a team the Panther boys finished second with 93 points, just half a point ahead of Cody which was third while Sheridan ran away with the boys’ team title with 185 points.

“Great performance in a great competition,” Smith said. “I was really happy with the way all of our kids performed against some of the best in the state in all classes.”

The Panthers won’t have to wait long to get back on the track, as they will host a triangular between themselves, Worland and Cody this week.

The meet was originally scheduled to take place on Thursday, but due to forecasted weather the meet has been moved up to today (Tuesday).

“With the meet changing to Tuesday, we will use it to kick off a good week of conditioning to prepare for next week where we may have some kids doing three meets,” Smith said.

Tuesday’s meet will begin with field events at 4 p.m. and track events beginning at 5 p.m.
