Pushing through rainy conditions paid off for two Powell High School boys’ track and field athletes, as they punched their tickets to the state meet next week in Casper, battling the elements in Cody at the Trackstravaganza on Thursday to end the regular season.

Those two new qualifiers came in the sprints, as Brayden Benander claimed the 400 meters with a time of 51.82 seconds, and Cobey Khan qualified in the 100 meter dash, taking third with a time of 11.46 seconds.

“It was really nice to see Cobey and Brayden break through with automatic qualifications, as they have been working to it and getting close,” coach Scott Smith said. “I still see improvement coming for both of them.”

In addition to Benander, the Panthers had six more event winners in Cody.

David Stearns won the 200 meters (23.39), Korbyn Warren won the 1600 meters (4:44.09), Lincoln Crawford won the 110 meter hurdles (15.67), Sawyer Wormald won the 300 meter hurdles (41.63), Braxton Nelson won the high jump clearing 5 feet, 11 inches, and Dayton Lawrence won the pole vault (12-6).

Panthers taking second place included Nelson who took second in the 100 meter dash (11.22) and tied for second in the 200 meters (23.69); Tanner Seifert placed second in the 400 meters (52.34); Colin Walker took second in the 1600 meters (5:07.37); Wormald was second in the 110 meter hurdles (15.85) and Crawford placed second in the 300 meter hurdles (43.11).

Additional top five Panther finishers  included Warren who placed third in the 800 meters (2:06.93); Nathan Varian was third in the 3200 meters (11:46.96); Karcher Foley took third in the long jump (18-7 1/2); Stearns was fourth in the 100 meter dash (11.54); Karson Howe placed fourth in the 3200 meters (12:11.4); Renzy Matthews took fourth in the 300 meter hurdles (52.2); Landon McDonald was fourth in the pole vault (11); Tristin Winninger took fourth in the long jump (18-1 1/2); Brady Harvey placed fourth in the discus (125-11); Alex Werner took fifth in the 800 meters (2:12.2) and Troy Cheatham was fifth in the pole vault (11).

As a team the Panthers finished with 212.5 points, 32 behind host Cody who took the top spot while Lovell brought its throwers and scored 39 points.

The Panthers open the postseason with a trip to Pinedale on Friday and Saturday.

“We are really excited for regionals this week, I am hoping to see the kids wearing a lot of medals at the end of the meet,” Smith said. “Both teams have good chances to bring home team hardware as well, but getting lots of individual medals is the main focus.”

Friday kicks off with field events at 1 p.m. quickly followed by the 800 meter final at 1:15 p.m. and then the remainder of the track events beginning at 1:40 p.m.

Saturday starts with field events at 9 a.m. and the 4x800 relay at 9:15 a.m. before a majority of finals begin at 10:10 a.m.

The final event, the 4x400 relay, is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start.

Those who have not automatically qualified for the state meet will need to place in the top eight individually; all four Panther relays have qualified.
