A small Powell boys’ swim team still managed to make a splash in a dual and invitational Dec. 20-21 in Riverton. 

“It actually went pretty well,” coach Stephanie Warren said.

She said while no new swimmers qualified for state, a number of swimmers improved their times in various events.

Nelson Kohlbus led the way at both events. Friday against the hosts he finished first in the 50 free (24.93) and 100 free (55.90).

He bettered his 50 free time Saturday to take second (24.03) in a larger invitational that included “a nice mix of teams,” Warren said, including state powerhouse Lander.

“The last couple of years we hadn’t seen Lander until the end of January,” she said, “so it was nice to see them.”

Conner Mayes also had a solid weekend and, Warren said, was able to grab some personal bests. He finished second in the 100 breast (1:17.89) Friday for his top placing of the weekend.

Warren said William Fuller also had a great weekend, adding two more events to his list of qualifying events. Tyler Kruger added a qualifying time in the 100 fly.

Trystan Preator did well too — he was the other second place individual placer Friday in the 100 fly (1:06.84) — just missing the qualifying time in the 200 IM. He recorded a 2:33.77 and the qualifying time is 2:33.75.

Warren said Taggart Shumway had a great swim in the 50 (26.26), also just missing a qualifying time of 26.25.

And new diver Dayton Lawrence had a new personal best diving score of his young career.

The team returns Jan. 3 for a triangular in Worland.
