A 72-year-old Billings man was evacuated from the Clark’s Fork Canyon and flown to a hospital on Wednesday afternoon, after his ATV rolled on top of him.
The crash on the Morrison Jeep Trail was reported at 3:20 p.m. Park County Search and Rescue, along with a Guardian Medical helicopter, Clark Fire and First Responders, Cody Regional Health Wilderness Response Team and an ambulance from Powell Valley Hospital Ambulance were all dispatched to the scene.
At 4:06 p.m., the Guardian Medical helicopter reached the victim, Christian Dietz, and relayed his exact location to the responding ground units. At 5:10 p.m., Dietz was air lifted to St. Vincent Hospital. The search and rescue ground teams continued into the crash site to evacuate the other persons in the ATV party.
While Park County Search and Rescue does not typically evacuate anything other than people, the decision was made to also remove the crashed ATV “to prevent a potential future threat to safety and life,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release. Both the members of the group and the ATV were brought to the bottom of the trail in the Clark’s Fork Canyon.
“We are fortunate for the indispensable resources we have available for these missions, that sometimes take us into remote and dangerous terrain,” said Park County Search and Rescue Coordinator Bill Brown, noting that the ground teams utilized multiple ATVs and a side by side for the mission.
The Morrison Jeep Trail is a rough and rocky route that connects the canyon to the Beartooth Mountains and an area near Island Lake.
