To celebrate National Park Week, Junior Ranger Day, Arbor Day and Earth Day, Bighorn Canyon will host several activities from April 17-25.
The festivities will include a weeklong Junior Ranger Facebook series. Last year, the park dedicated an entire day to virtual Junior Ranger activities.
However, “we decided that is too much time in front of the screen and not enough time outside,” explained Bighorn Canyon Chief of Interpretation Christy Fleming, “ so this year we are going to spread it out over the week.”
Junior Rangers will need to interact with the Facebook page over multiple days to become eligible for a Junior Ranger prize at the end of the week. Posts will be scheduled for 4 p.m. on Monday, April 19, at 8:30 a.m. from April 20-22, and at 4 p.m. on Friday April 23.
“We encourage teachers and their classes to participate,” said Fleming.
On Wednesday, April 21, Bighorn Canyon personnel will participate in the Arbor Day celebration at the Lovell Community Center, joining fifth grade students, the Town of Lovell, the Lovell Tree Board, and the Forest Service. Winners of the Arbor Day poster contest will be announced the following week.
Additionally, Thursday, April 22, Bighorn Canyon will celebrate Earth Day with three clean-up projects. One will involve preparing the flowerbeds at the Lovell Visitor Center for summer and another will clean up the Kane Cemetery.
Volunteers are asked to meet at the Lovell Visitor Center at 1 p.m. April 22. Bring work gloves and water, while rakes, clippers and shovels will be provided.
The third Earth Day project is a recycling challenge for residents at Fort Smith, Montana, who are asked to bring their recyclables to the Park Service headquarters building from 1-4 p.m. The park will have a recycling trailer parked outside. Newspaper, aluminum and steel cans, corrugated cardboard (no gray, white or black cardboard) and No. 1, No. 2 and No. 2 colored plastic bottles will be accepted.
“Please ensure that all items are cleaned, dry and separated,” Fleming said.
