Bibbey steps in to lead orchestra

Posted

Tom Bibbey spent the Thanksgiving holiday break brushing up for a pinch-hit role as conductor of the Northwest Civic Orchestra’s Dec. 4 Christmas concert.

Bibbey regularly performs with the orchestra on trumpet. For the Christmas concert, however, he was asked by long-time director Maurine Akin to step in as conductor.

Akin, a violinist who has conducted the civic orchestra for eight years, was needed to lead the string section, Bibbey explained.

It took some committed prep time on his part.

“I had done some substituting in rehearsals when a conductor had a conflict, but it had been several years since I looked at an orchestral score,” said Bibbey, a former NWC music faculty member. “So I had to do a lot of score study over Thanksgiving.”

Akin was among those who commended Bibbey for his stand-in performance.

“Tom was great,” Akin said. “I wanted the Christmas concert to be fun, and he really did well.”
