Some Powell residents have recently received calls from scammers falsely claiming to be with City of Powell’s billing department.
The callers demand immediate payments on the residents’ utility accounts, threatening that utilities will be shut off if money isn’t paid. However, these phone calls are a scam. The City of Powell does not contact residents to demand payments on their accounts.
If you receive such a call, do not provide payment information, the city advises. If you are unsure if the call is legitimate, contact the city’s Billing Department directly at 307-754-7263, or the Powell Police Department at 307-754-2212 for further guidance.
The Cody Police Department reported Tuesday that several residents received similar calls from scammers posing as City of Cody representatives.
“The calls appear to be routed through several different states, as the caller I.D. and area codes don’t match,” the department said.
City of Cody customers who become delinquent on their bills won’t receive an urgent phone call, the department said, instead receiving an automated call that directs them to contact city hall at 307-527-7511.
“Like with all potential scams, your Police Department would like you to remain vigilant and cautious of any phone calls soliciting money, especially involving a sense of urgency, which is a common tactic used by these criminals,” the Cody PD said.
