With plunging temperatures and snow in the forecast, the local sugar beet crop was 79 percent harvested at the close of deliveries Tuesday, Oct. 20.
Growers will push forward “until weather shuts us down” in the Lovell Factory District, said Western Sugar Cooperative board member Ric Rodriguez, a Heart Mountain grower.
On the horizon, temperatures are forecast to fall into single digits before this weekend. The arctic front was expected to move into the Big Horn Basin by the early morning hours of today (Thursday).
For beets already delivered in the 2020 crop, average sugar content has been running a favorable 19.03%.
