Powell’s bars are getting an extra hour to celebrate the arrival of the new year.
On Monday, the Powell City Council voted unanimously to let the city’s retail liquor license holders stay open until 3 a.m. on New Year’s Day. It will be up to each establishment to decide if they want to take advantage of the extended hours or simply close as usual.
Typically, the city’s bars must stop serving booze by 2 a.m., but an ordinance passed in 2023 allows them to get an extra hour on up to two nights a year. The bars jointly pick the dates, which must then be approved by the council. Eight license holders signed the request to have extended hours on New Year’s Eve, led by K-Bar Saloon owner Amy Cozzens.
Under the council’s resolution, establishments must stop serving at 3 a.m., but they have until 4 a.m. to get all of their patrons out of the building.
