Backpack Blessings launches virtual pie sale fundraiser

Posted

This December’s virtual fundraising appeal by Backpack Blessings of Powell is themed, “Pie in the Sky with — not Diamonds — but Dollars.”

As in 2020, Backpack Blessings has had to cancel its annual pie sale fundraiser out of concern related to the continuing pandemic. But just like a year ago, Backpack Blessings is going ahead with a virtual pie sale to support its efforts to provide crucial weekend nutrition for Powell elementary school children.

In recent experience, Backpack Blessings received over 70 pies, baked and donated yearly. The wonderful selection of donated pies sold for $10, $15, $20 and $25 apiece.

Although no actual baked goods changed hands in 2020, the virtual pie sale raised about $9,000 for the Backpack Blessings program.

The appeal is the same from the group’s board of directors this year: Would you be willing to donate the dollar amount it would have cost to either bake or purchase a pie?

The Backpack Blessings program is feeding nearly 90 elementary school children, and the number is expected to climb through the school year. Filling a backpack costs approximately $7.50 each week, per child, and the price of groceries is also on the rise.

Monetary donations are tax deductible, as Backpack Blessings of Powell is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Sharon Earhart, president of the Backpack Blessings board, noted that many donations are received during the pie sale.

“If you would like to make a gift in the name of a friend, family member, or in memory of someone, just provide names and addresses of those in whose name you are donating. A thank you card can be sent to them, recognizing the donation,” Earhart said.

The virtual pie sale fundraiser will extend through the month of December. Checks should be made payable to Backpack Blessings of Powell, P.O. Box 1, Powell, WY 82435.

Members of the board include Earhart, Jackie Hall, Linda Easum, Diane Hensman, Sara Prescott, Judy Good, Marybeth Richardson and Dianne Ostermiller. Call Richardson at 307-754-5399 with any questions.
