Multiple auto burglaries — some successful and others only attempted — were reported on Sunday in the area of Park County Road 2AB north of Cody.
The crimes were reported on Oak Drive, Gerber Lane and Northridge Drive.
“Everyone in these areas, who have not checked on their vehicles yet today, is encouraged to do so,” the Park County Sheriff’s Office said in a Sunday Facebook post. “The suspect(s) are approaching vehicles to see if they are unlocked. The unlocked vehicles have been burglarized with the suspect(s) stealing wallets, flashlights, binoculars, cash, and any other items of value.”
The sheriff’s office asked for the public’s help.
“There have been multiple reports of a loud truck, parking and driving back and forth, in these areas last night, unfortunately no other suspect information is available,” the sheriff’s office said.
They noted many homes have a surveillance system and asked for footage of a suspicious or loud truck in the area between 9 p.m. Saturday night and 6 a.m. Sunday morning. Anyone with information about the crimes is encouraged to call 307-754-8700. The Park County Sheriff’s Office also offers a “Tip Line” that can be utilized at www.parkcountysheriff.net/tip-line/.
The sheriff’s office also offered a reminder that auto burglary “is typically a crime of opportunity. A few extra steps can sometimes mean protecting your valuables.”
They offered these tips:
• Lock the doors and roll up the windows, including the sunroof.
• Do not leave valuables in the vehicle if it can be avoided.
• Lock items up in the trunk or completely out of sight before arriving on site, and avoid storing items after parking.
• Keep all electronic cords, docking stations or power adapters out of sight, even if the device is not with them.
• Do not leave electronic devices in a vehicle powered on. Sometimes the Bluetooth or other paring option can be detected, making a vehicle more attractive.
• Park in well-lit, busy areas if possible.
• Use any anti-theft devices on your vehicle.
• Don’t leave a garage door opener in plain view.
“While there is no complete guarantee that anything listed above will protect your vehicle from being broken into, it certainly can lessen the chances of the loss of valuables,” the sheriff’s office said. “As in most crime prevention ideas, vigilance and knowledge go a long way.”
