By the end of the final session, the Vernon College sophomore remained in front of the pack.

Asay wrapped up a stellar 2010 CNFR appearance with a 74.5-point ride on Saturday to post a four-day total of 306.5 points, good enough to share the average title with Tarleton State's Isaac Diaz. Diaz improved enough with a 77.5-point Saturday ride to tie Asay atop the podium.

Ironically, it was Diaz with whom Asay traveled during his PRCA rookie of the year season in 2008.

The pair finished three points clear of the next-closest rider, Missouri Valley's Will Smith. Nobody else in the field was able to top 300 points over the course of four rounds as only eight out of the 12 riders were able to register scores in Saturday's short-go.

Fueled by Asay's performance, the Vernon College men's rodeo team amassed 682.5 points to claim the 2010 national team title. Vernon College finished nearly 100 points ahead of national runner-up Missouri Valley. Central Wyoming College finished fourth in the final men's standings.

Gillette College captured the national championship on the women's side of the competition. The Pronghorns won the title in a rout, finishing more than 175 points ahead of national runner-up South Dakota State.

The national title adds to an already-strong 2010 rodeo season for Asay. The Powell native has enjoyed early-season success on the PRCA circuit as well and currently sits 44th in the overall season earnings chart.

NWC riders wrap up action

While Asay was on his way to winning a national title, the three CNFR-qualifying members of Northwest College's rodeo team wrapped up their competition in Casper earlier in the week.

After two days of frustration, the Trappers' Cody Proctor gave NWC its best showing when she scored a time of 2.7 seconds on Thursday in the final preliminary round of breakaway roping competition. Proctor's time was good enough for seventh overall in the round three standings.

It was Proctor's only score in three tries at the CNFR.

Teammate Haily Hamlin was unable to match her second round performance and failed to record a score in the third round of the breakaway roping competition. Hamlin, like Proctor, was able to register a time in just one of the three rounds.

Between Hamlin's second-round performance and Proctor's third-round time, however, the pair was able to score 20 team points for Northwest College. The Trappers placed in a tie for 30th in the final women's team standings.

The Northwest College men, represented by bull rider Cayd Kluesner, failed to score a team point. Kluesner, competing in the event with a torn knee ligament, was able to register one scoring ride in three attempts.
