It’s cherry pie time! The Cherry Pie Luncheon was started in 1968 as a fundraiser to send local girls to Wyoming Girls State, and it’s been an annual event in Powell ever since.

This event is normally a sit-down luncheon held at the American Legion hall at 143 S. Clark St. in Powell. With social distancing encouraged and the need to sanitize after each seating, it was decided by the Legion Auxiliary to continue with the lunch, but on a take-out basis only for this year at the American Legion hall. The menu is a choice of ham, tuna or chicken casserole, tossed salad, roll with butter and, of course, a piece of cherry pie for $9 per person.

The take-out luncheon will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday. Call in orders to 307-250-6060 or just show up, as several meals will be ready to go. Payments are accepted by cash, check or credit card at the door. Donations are also accepted. The proceeds support Wyoming Girls State delegates as well as veterans’ projects.

Girls State is a week-long session that helps girls learn government, patriotism, leadership and social skills and is open to girls from both the junior and senior grade levels this year. Applications for the session are being accepted until Feb. 15.
