Word has been received of the death of Alice Mary (Barloga) Olsen, a five-year resident of Powell on Nov. 6, at her home in Waldorf, Md., at the age of 63.
Mrs. Olsen lived in Powell from 1997 to 2002. She and her husband John moved to Powell from Bowie, Md., after his retirement. Upon her husband's death in 2003, Mrs. Olsen returned to Maryland to be near her daughters.
She was born in Chicago and raised in Brookfield, Ill. She attended Kansas State University from 1960 to 1963, where she was a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority. She married John Olsen in 1963 and lived in Minot, N.D.,and Fort Collins, Colo., prior to moving to Maryland in 1972.
She received her bachelor’s degree in sociology from Bowie State University in Maryland in 1990. She was a tutor for special education students in Prince George’s County, Maryland until 1997.
Mrs. Olsen was a member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and a member of the AAUW book club.
Survivors include her daughters, Jennifer Olsen Foster of Brandywine, Md.,and Vanessa Olsen of Reston, Va.; a brother, John S. Barloga of Clio, Mich.; and one grandson, John Michael Foster III of Brandywine, Md.
