On Saturday, Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area will host a series of events for National Public Lands Day at the Cal S. Taggart Visitor Center in Lovell. All of the day’s events are free and open to everyone — though an archeology field school has limited space and requires pre-registration.
A listing of the events follows.
Archeology field day
Preregistration is required. The day will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the Lovell Visitor Center. Park Archeologist Richard Olsen will give a short presentation on rules, regulations, safety and history. The group will then carpool to a survey site. Participants will help conduct an archeological survey while learning archeology techniques. They should plan to hike several miles.
Space is limited to 10 adults. To reserve a spot, call the Bighorn Canyon Visitor Center at 307-548-5406. Participants will need to wear long pants and hiking boots for protection, bring sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, a sack lunch and LOTS of water. We intend to be done with this field day by noon so that participants can participate in Bird Day.
Plant Bingo — 9 a.m.
Join Youth Conservation Corps member Haley Lynn for a fun, family-friendly, interactive plant themed bingo game during a hike. The game will consist of three rounds, but you’re welcome to come for just one. There are two rounds of common native plants and one round of noxious weeds in the area.
“This program is highly interactive with you and the natural world around you, picking the plants on your bingo card,” organizers say. Instead of the traditional numbers, these bingo cards will feature pictures of the vegetation in the area. It’s your job as a player to hike the area around you and find the plants on your card. Once you think you’ve matched the picture with the plant, “Ranger” Haley will explain if you’re correct and share a fun fact about the plant. Bingo winners will receive a post card from the gift shop.
Participants should bring sunscreen, lots of water, a hat, sun glasses, closed toed shoes, pants and bug spray.
Draper Museum Raptor Experience Program — 1 p.m.
Join Ranger Todd Johnson and Melissa Hill from the Draper Natural History Museum for a demonstration of local raptors, including a golden eagle, great horned owl, and other birds. The presentation begins at 1 p.m. in the auditorium of the visitor center.
The birds and staff will stay on site after the presentation to answer any questions.
“... bring the entire family!” organizers say.
