A smashing good time

Smashing cars and smashing pumpkins combined for the annual Smashtober demolition derby and nobody felt the crunch quite like Cody’s Andy Neff who found his truck upside down with the roof caving in under the weight of another truck.

“It was a little bit of a ride,” Neff said after crawling out of the cab uninjured. “I knew it was coming — when the roof caved in it had me thinking of putting in a roll-bar.”

The truck division is relatively new and trucks were not required to have roll-bars to prevent their cabs from collapsing. That will change for next year’s demolition derby, said event organizer Brock Ninker.

“I knew I would roll, but I didn’t think the roof would cave in,” Neff said.

Meanwhile, on top of Neff’s truck was Powell’s Josh Senn in his 1985 Ford F-250. Senn said he had no idea Neff would tip over when going in for the collision that literally brought him out on top of his competition for the truck division.

“I was scared because I knew he didn’t have a roll-bar,” Senn said. “All I could think about was Andy, be OK.”

Neff walked away fine, but his truck didn’t fare so well as it was dragged out of the arena.

Aside from the quick scare from the rollover, the rest of the demolition derby couldn’t have gone better. Despite being held well into October, the weather felt more like July with temperatures in the low 80s throughout most of the evening — a welcome change from the norm for the 1,000-plus attendees.

“It is a good turnout,” Ninker said. “This mild temperature makes the cars run a lot better; especially because these get so hot by nature.”

The derby brought in drivers from as far away as Williston, North Dakota. Powell High School 1993 alum Shad May made the seven-hour drive to his home turf to compete in his 1972 Pontiac Grand Ville.

Senn was the winner of the truck segment and Travis Long won the new event for compact cars in his 1976 Ford Mustang.

Rob Laing came out on top of them all as the grand prize winner of the final round in his 1968 Chrysler Imperial.
