Dear editor:
In an avalanche of unsolicited mail, I picked out an envelope whose contents explained An Ancient Evil: The History of Child Sacrifice to include the cultures of Ancient Carthage, the Phoenicians/Canaanites, Ancient Israel, Greco-Romans, Mayans, Incas and Aztecs, and how the German Nazis revived these mind-numbing atrocities. Out of the Nazis’ provider (IG Farben Pharmaceuticals) of poison gas for killing children and adults with disabilities, and later Jewish and other captives, came the pharmaceutical company Hoeschst AG which took over the French drug company Roussel Uclaf. This unholy alliance led to the production of RU-486, also known as mifepristone — the chemical abortion pill.
I then remembered walking down the street in Washington, D.C., with a friend, carrying pro-life signs on our way to the annual March for Life in the late 1980s and encountering two men, dressed in business suits, who yelled at us angrily that unwanted babies should be killed because they didn’t want their tax dollars spent on them.
As citizens of a putatively civilized nation, we have to decide whether we want to be part of the problem or part of the solution. We can turn our backs and refuse to defend the right to life. We can agree with the Washington bureaucrats that we don’t want any of our tax dollars spent on saving innocent, vulnerable lives. Or we can expend some of our own time, talent, and treasure in supporting the defenseless.
Do we wish to be a shining city on the hill or the ancient evil?
