Dear editor:
This is an email I sent to the Wyoming Legislature because the issue is critical. I wanted it to reach more than their ears.
I am Martin Garhart, a Republican and I live in Powell and I vote. I am asking that you table draft bill 26LSO-0080 working draft 0.5, Sexually explicit materials in libraries-requirements.
This legislation is a very slippery slope. Our libraries are the public repository of our collective ideas, histories, imagination and information. They are the footprint of our society past and present and they are at the pinnacle of freedom of speech. As a gun owner, this bill is the equivalent of a law that would say that because people kill other people with guns we should make laws saying no one can have access to them. But wait, what about the right to bear arms?
I also find it ironic the Wyoming Freedom Caucus is leading this charge when they keep waving the banner that says we need to keep government out of our lives. It appears that they are not about freedom, but more about giving themselves the power to tell us what we can and cannot do or say. That is not freedom. This bill represents another attack on our constitutional rights.
Please table or better yet remove it.
Respectfully,
Martin Garhart
